Freelancing Bad Habits That Could Kill Your Design Career
Whether you are a freelance graphic designer or a web designer, you both face the same challenges in freelancing. Both deal with clients, do their own accounting and even marketing. There are so many things that a freelancer has to do and has to take note of in order to be successful in freelancing. If you don’t want customers to hate you for good, change bad habits and behavior that a freelance professional shouldn’t have. Here are the list of bad habits that you need to avoid:
Working alone:
Working alone can increase the likelihood of some workplace hazards or risks occurring.
Indeed, when you are a freelancer, you would work alone but it doesn’t really mean that you have to go solo all the time. Attend some seminars and workshops on design. Meet other designers through this. You can develop your social activities by doing this.
Being lazy:
Laziness is tempting. Sometimes there is no better idea that to laze away the day on a hammock. In the busy world you live in, you might feel you deserve a little laziness. You are probably right. However, if your laziness has taken on a life of its own, you can get it back under control. Laziness begins when you ignore that little nagging voice in your head. You know, the one that reminds you when you should take action on something rather than sit by and let the opportunity slip away.
Repeating past mistakes:
It is important to realize that everyone makes mistakes, and many people make the same mistakes more than once, which is the reason for the phrase “bad habits.” You should avoid feeling guilty about making mistakes, but at the same time, you should make a resolution to learn from them. If you repeat the same mistakes, it shows you aren’t making progress and causes repeated suffering.
Copying designs:
Deliberate copying can result in huge fines and lost credibility, and it will ultimately kill your business. Avoid it like the plague. You can use other designs as inspiration but do not copy them deliberately. Some designers have a bad habit of passing off what they plagiarize as merely inspiration. While you may get away with it sometimes, but in the long run, your credibility as a genuine and original designer will be badly affected.
Procrastinating:
Some graphic designers tend to procrastinate on their projects. When they end up falling short of their deadline, they pass off a mediocre design as minimalism design trend. Procrastination will make your clients go away since they expect you to be efficient.
Feeling shy:
If you are shy, you’re unlikely to charge what you’re worth, to stand up to clients who treat you poorly, to market yourself efficiently or to jump at every opportunity to find new clients. Step out of your bubble and embrace your career. Make things happen for yourself, and you will see huge success that you can be proud of.
Competing in fees:
Do not charge too much and do not charge too low. Keep your rates right by charging what you are worth. This way, you are being fair to your clients.
